Nerja has long history proved by paintings found in his caves famous patrollings in 1959 and nowadays it is the Spanish tourist place most visited after the Museum of the Meadow of Madrid and the Alhambra of Granada. The Romans gave him to the town the name of Detunda, and later it was conquered for Muslims. Under the Moslem kingdom, the name changed to Narixa, which means «abundant source» and which is the origin of the current name.

In the center of the Town there is the Balcony of Europe, a lookout that gives imposing conference of the sea to his guests. The name of "Balcony of Europe" was proposed by King Alfonso XII who visited the area in 1885 after a disastrous earthquake, and who stayed captivated by the stage. Nerja has several beaches, between which it is necessary to emphasize that of Burriana, Calahonda, The Lounge, The Torrecilla and the Playazo, counting the last one with an environment that there are still no suffered the consequences of the uncontrolled urban development of of Malaga coast.

Nerja possesses the whole year a marvelous climate, therefore it is an area where subtropical fruits as the custard apple are cultivated or avocado.

Her Cave of Nerja, called "natural Cathedral of the Costa del Sol", it is to 750 meters of the coast on a hillock, to approximately 200 meters on the sea level and in the face of the Saw of Almijara.
