 One believes that the area was already inhabited from the Roman epoch, although his name does not appear till the end of XVth century, when Reyes Católicos transferred approximately 100 grain measures of ground of the "place of the Slate" to Don Pedro Romero, in recognition for having conquered Álora

Since then, there begins the construction of the ancestral house of Diego Romero, on that centuries later he would get up Palace of Beautiful Port, and of the parochial church, and around from these principal buildings there was arising the small hamlet that gave birth to to the Town, which remained constituted like term municipally by means of a Real Certificate of the Top Court of Justice of 1847.

The Municipal Museum of Slate has his origin in the ancient one Museum Hollander, whose funds were assembled by the artist of American nationality, settled down in Spain, Gino Hollander, to the one who owes his name.
