The city is placed in one of slopes of the hill of San Jorge, and framed by the mass of Vulture (1.427 m) and the double peak of the Friar (1.372 m). The helmet has an average altitude on the 681 meters sea level. In direction to Calasparra and the river Segura extends an area of garden and cultivation of cereals and rice; in direction of Andalusia it predominates over the mountainous area (Revolcadores; The Wineskins, 1.880 m; Villafuerte, 1.750 m), with the flatness cerealísticas of Field of san Juan and Field of Béjar, with The Sabinar as principal nucleus of population, and Gully of the Cross looking at the Field of Caravaca; and in direction to Albacete, after the saws of the Cherry tree and of the Millstone (1.414 m), it is necessary to review especially the picturesque district of Benizar, with traces of an Arab castle and numerous sources natural.
It is a question of the most mountainous area of Murcia, with more than 20 peaks that overcome 1.400 m. The most important of them is the Peak of Revolcadores, which with 2.027 m high is the highest of the region.
In his term there are born the river Alhárabe and his tributary, the Benamor, which to his time they come together in the Segura.

There are also argáricas graves and walls calcolíticas in the hill of The Vipers (ca. 3000 adC); in The Molinicos one has found Iberian town (IVth century adC).
Medieval and modern history
The Moratalla existence researches in writing for the first time in the XIIth century, when Priego and Benizar is mentioned like establishments dependent on Hisn Muratalla. In the XIIIth century they mention Mudejar nuclei assigned to the control of the Order of Santiago; from 1280 Christians' repopulations come. During this stage of frontier area lived through diverse plundering and epidemics. To the ends of the XIVth century the fortitude is erected and in the XVth century her splendid Tower of the Homage. Towards the ends of the XVIth century her population has expanded very much, until inhabitants reached 4.500 . Until middle of XVIIIth century one lives, in general, through phase of agricultural prosperity.
Contemporary history
From the middle of the XVIIIth century, the rural life turns out to be very hard for epidemics and agricultural crises appellants, social phenomena like the banditry and the caciquism, and the void industrialization. Even in the middle of the XXth century scarcely there was industry and the bad ones communications were supporting isolated Moratalla of the routes commercial. (See the following epigraph, Demography).
In the recent history of the municipality, the most excellent facts there is been the construction of the divided highway of the Northwest, that a chronic shortcoming has finished to ; and the big fire of 1994, for which they burned more than 30.000 hectares.
In 1994 they burned almost the whole saw of The Millstone, the whole saw of Cherry tree and the mounts placed between this one and the sanctum of Ours Lady of the Hope, in Calasparra, on the banks of the river Segura. In 2005 states that some pine groves have re-sprouted, especially in the areas of shady, with heights in general not superior to 1 m, and only gallery of the bank has renewed entirely the forest of Segura. The area of The Murtas and other semiarid extensions scarcely they have recovered, as the vegetation of sabinar, which turns out to be typically damaged by the fires.

Although in Holy Week processions are celebrated, more characteristic sound the uninterrupted tamboradas, inside one common tradition to Moratalla, Mule, Hellín and Tobarra (and fellow man to the most north of the province of Teruel). In this context, celebration moratallera is distinguished by his mixed disorder: the Nazarenes dress with handmade tunics of capricious designs and differentiated, with which the streets do not fill less of color than of noise.
