The foundation of Juliiobriga, after the Cantabrian (29-19 a.C.) Wars, transforms it into definitive symbol of the dominance of Rome on the resistance of the Cantabrians.
The city of Juliobriga received its appellative of the own emperor Octaviano Augusto and of its adoptive family, the gens Iulia.
For their location in front of the access to the valley of Besaya, Juliobriga was fated to control the traffic of goods and people from the plateau of Duero toward the Cantabrian sea.
Juliobriga was developed slowly until reaching its full acme at the end of the Century I and in the first half of the century II of our era. later on it decays until their total disappearance in the Century III.
