The ikurriña (or ikurrina that is pronounced in Basque the same as the previous one) is a flag created in 1894 by the siblings Luis and Sabino it Claws (the founder of Nationalist Basque Party), as symbol of Euskadi that initially identified with the territory of Biscay.As he/she explained Spider (for example, in 1895, for a character's bizkaitarra mouth in The flag Phoenician), the design of the flag it was based on that of the shield of Biscay: He/she has a red bottom, color of the dominion of Biscay and, according to Spider, color of the old bottom of the shield. On this bottom, a green cross, the apostle's symbol San Andrés is superimposed, pattern of Biscay, taken of the seven crossings of the bordure of the shield. It would symbolize the independence vizcaÃna to have been reached San Andrés' day the victory of Arrigoriaga against the Spaniards. To San Andrés' cross he/she is superimposed a white cross, symbol of the Catholic religion, as the one that appears inserted in the oak of the shield. This order in the placement of the crosses meant that the legislation vizcaÃna should "depend on in an everything to the religious and moral" laws.
