The Church of Santa María of the Port has monument category. Their origin goes back to the first half of the XIII century. It was one of the first monasteries of Cantabria together with that of San Vicente of Fístoles in Esles of Cayón. It was part of a monastery of Benedictines, probably erected in the century VIII, in time of the repopulation of the area. Their origin is legendary, since the church was founded by Santiago Apostle, when it was in Spain in the year 37, with cathedral category and that it consecrated Arcadio (that later it was San Arcadio) like bishop. Then, in the century VIII are when the Benedictines would found the monastery in the same place.   Author Nicolás Pérez
