Bargota is a municipality of the Statutory Community of Navarrese (Spain) in the merindad of Estella.
According to Mikel Belasko [1] Bargota is a toponym of origin romance that could derive of the expression high varga. Varga or barga are a word used in Castilian and Basque that has a meaning related with hill or slope. According to DRAE one of the meanings of the word varga is more pending part of a hill. The town of Bargota in fact settles in the hillside of a ravine. According to Belasko the evolution of the name would have been high Barga - > Bargalta - > Bargauta - > Bargota. Although old documents that endorse that evolution, don't exist like support of this hypothesis the fact is that an uninhabited one exists in the municipality of Mañeru also denominated Bargota that yes he/she appears in old documents under the name of Bargauta.
