The Flag of Galicia was born during the XIX century inspired by the flag of the Naval Command of Coruña.During the XIX century there was a great affluence of Galician emigrants toward America. One of the main ports of exit of the emigration was Coruña. The tradition counts that the Galician emigrants thought that the flag of the Naval Command of Coruña that waved in the port and in the transatlantic ones it was in fact the flag of Galicia.

The shield of Galicia appears described in the Law 5/1984, of May 29, Law of the symbols of Galicia. The historians Faustino Menéndez-Pidal and Juan José Sánchez Badiola documents it for the first time in two armoriales of final of the XIII century, Segar's Roll and that of Herault Vermandois that attribute them to the king from Galicia. The first assign him/her three discovered chalices, the second one only, place setting. The romantic Galician historian Manuel Murguía speculated that its origin could be due to a speaking sign: calice=Galice. They also mention it other later armoriales, as "Armorial Gymnich" of Flanders, 1445, and "Armorial Bergshanmar" whose summary dates of 1436, where some three thousand three hundred shields belonging to States and families are picked up of almost all Europe. There we can see "in the folio four returned... well stylized ciborium and filling the most possible thing the field of the shield." Above the composition the word is written Galiscién (Galicia).
