The castle of Loarre is a castle románico located on the mountain of Loarre, Spain (to some 35 kilometers of Huesca). From their position one has a control on the whole plain of the Valley of Huesca and in particular on he/she Bowls, Muslim main square of the area and that it controlled the agricultural rich lands of the plain. The castle settles on a promontory of calcareous rock that uses as foundations. This supposed a defensive great advantage, since this way the walls could not be mined (habitual technique in the blockade of strengths that consisted on building a tunnel below the wall stops later to sink it and to make this way a way for the one that to assault). It is also surrounded by a wall with turrets. The castle is in quite good conservation (except for the part of the old castle of Sancho III, a lot but deteriorated) state and it is considered as the conserved strength better románica of Europe. The small chapel that there are to the entrance (with an incredible acoustics) and the majestic church of the castle (of the one that unfortunately the whereabouts of the paintings romanicas is ignored) in which calls the attention the dome (for the not very habitual thing that is in the románico) highlights. It was built in the XI century by the king's order Sancho III, to serve as advance party from the one that to organize the attacks against he/she Bowls. The initial construction was enlarged later on the one that we know nowadays during the reign of Sancho RamĂrez under whose reign you proceeded to the foundation of a monastery in this castle.During the XII century the area stops to be border and the castle loses its initial function of advance party against the Muslim lands. In the XV century, the population that lived to the feet of the castle moves to the current village of Loarre, material reutilizando of the strength. http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castillo_de_Loarre Author: Miguel Daza |
