Surrounded with mounts from four points cardinal (Montejurra, Peñaguda, Santa Barbara), Estella preserves it structure with which there was born more than 900 years ago in spite of adding up to this one, different streets and passages. It preserves the traditions more established. Estella had his origin in the route jacobea. Axis of one active commerce was a frequent head office of the sovereign ones and of the Spanish Parliament in the Middle Age. Estella agglutinates concerning the square of St Martin the biggest monuments concentration. One one can realize also exclusive trip for Romanesque buildings.
Born to the heat of the Way Jacobeo, Estella was founded by Sancho Ramírez in the year 1090 and he lived through his climax in the XIIIth century like enclave of the route to Santiago. His monuments have given him the by-name of “la Toledo of the north ” and already in the XVth century it was known like Estella the beautiful one. Monumental city that hoards big examples of the Romanesque one and of Gothic, traces of the Milky Way.
In the square of St Martin the source of the jets is located, Renaissance man of the second half of the XVIth, popularly known like the source of “la monkey ”. In the same square the jewel is architectural of the city, the Palace of the Kings of Navarre, of late Romanesque style and model only one of civil architecture Romanesque of Navarre. From the numerous small palaces and large houses that the city preserves, they emphasize the palace of the Eguía, reformed enough, and the house Brother Diego de Estella, plateresque palace of the XVIth situated in the street of Rúa. The church of San Pedro of Lizarra, it is the parish more ancient of the city, and that of San Pedro of the Rúa, of style Romanesque late, there preserves an original front of the XIIIth century and one cloister of ends of the XIIth that constitutes one of the most beautiful sets of the Romanesque Navarrese. Estella's Jewry was the third one in importance of Navarre, after the mosques of Tudela and Pamplona. On March 6, 1328, he suffered a cruel antiJewish attack, in which the Jews were stabbed in mass and his set fire houses. After these disturbances, the king favored the recovery of the Jewish communities of city, nevertheless, Estella's mosque had it again neither population nor the previous economic strength.
