The Monastery of San Salvador of Leyre is placed in the skirt south of the Saw of Leyre, along with the Yesa locality, to 50 km of Cardinal Pamplona.
It treats as one of the most important monasteries of Spain, of that already have important news in the IXth century and that there are crossed moments of splendor and ruin, suffering diverse reshapings of which the principal ones are his practice reconstruction in the XVIth century and the last restoration jobs during the second half of the XXth century.
It carries Speciosa of the Monastery of Leyre. His initial splendor like convent of the Benedictine monks, during the IXth century to XI had a lot to do with the phase of the reconquest and consolidation of the Kingdom of Navarre, since in his walls they found shelter, protection, sanación and operations base the different kings of epoch.
From the XIIth century a series of disputes of jurisdiction ended in the exit of the monastery of the Benedictine monks and his control for the Cistercians, phase of minor relevancy but in the one that big works realized, reconstructing part of Church until the XIVth century and coming to the construction of a new one monastery in the XVIth century.
At the beginning of the XIXth century he suffered harassment and plundering, until in 1836 it was closed and the dispersed monks. This abandonment lasted more than 100 years, causing the ruin of the Monastery, and it was not even her second half of the XXth century that the restoration jobs returned the monumental splendor. Nowadays the old monastery is a hotel, the new monastery has a living monastic community and the Church and the crypt they are opened for the public.
Church of Santa Maria of Leyre
The Church in his set constitutes the architectural element principally of the monastery, supporting parts of the construction Romanesque from the XIth century until the XIIth century like the crypt, the apses, her tower, the principal ship and the porch or Speciosa Carries, but to that join different later elements, like the Gothic vault, the pantheon of the kings of Navarre and a small chapel also Gothic of the XIVth and XVth centuries. Between the embellishment there emphasize it image of Santa Maria of Leyre, a size of dead Christ in cross of the XIVth century and the reredos of the XVIIth century.
