Sangüesa is Merindad, Region, vale and municipality and council. As Municipality and Town hall is formed by the councils of Sangüesa, Gabarderal, Rocaforte with a whole of 4971 inhabitants.

Before the foundation of the medieval town, area already had his poblamiento precedents from the Age of Bronze and had been a head office of a Roman military camp. Sangüesa constitutes one of the more important town-planning and monumental sets of Navarre, then, in addition to the Churches of Santa Maria, of Santiago, of the Salvador, and of convents as that of San Francisco or of Carmen, in the streets of his medieval nucleus there survive numerous Gothic, Renaissance and baroque palaces that do of his visit a real lesson across the history and the art. There is that to quote also the Romanesque church of San Adrián of Vadoluengo, placed to 1,5 km of Sangüesa. Resources of big importance as Javier's castle, the Monastery of Leyre and Foces de Lumbier and Arbayún, does of this region a forced visit.

In Santa Maria the Real jewel of the Romanesque Navarrese emphasizes the front  realized in the XIIth century by the teacher Leodegarius, that, judging by his name and his style, it must be a question of a Burgundian sculptor of the region of Autum. In the eardrum it represents the Last Judgement, being appreciated in these figures and in of the jambs the lengthening identificativo of the San style Lázaro de Autum. In the skinny ones of the big arch there can be contemplated some scenes of northerly content as the blacksmith Regin forging the sword or Sirgud killing to the dragon Fafner. The eardrum crowns with two statues apartments under arcades of Hispanic tradition what leads to thinking that both the skinny ones and this top part -in that again we find a Christ in majestad accompanied of the apostles - owes a new teacher to itself, signing up the one that also works in Saint John of the Rock. The Major Reredos also is magnificent.

In n. ° 12 of Rúa Mayor of Sangüesa finds the Palace of the Dukes of Granada of Ega, ancient palace of the Añués, which at present belongs to the counts of Javier.

Also we can visit the spectacular one Palace of Viana's Prince.
