"Almonacid", proceeds of "almonastir", " almonaster", it is a Latinism used by the Almoravid ones, it means "monastery". Alfonso VI donated this place to the church of Toledo. In 1132 Alfonso VII transfers this town to Count don Pons of Bad-tempered. In 1176 the king gives it to himself to the Order of Calatrava. Almost till the end of XVIIIth century the castle was supported in power of the archbishops of Toledo. It is famous in the war of the Independence, the battle of Almonacid, in which the Marshall Sebastián reinforced with the arrival of king José, had to withdraw towards the Guadiana the army from himself Spanish. 4.000 men and 2.000 cost to the Spanish the battle to the French. The Central Meeting granted in 1816 a medal to all that took part in this combat. (Fte.-Texto Delegation)
