The place name "barcience" makes to think about one indigenous, related word with "chaff", of Celtic origin. Also, there could be related with "barcinal", "chaff", which means "big load of straw". Testimonies of the culture stay eneolítica in bell-shaped ceramics. The Celtic Town in his advance colonizing for the average basin of the Tagus, could found the hamlet that occupies us. Romanizado the territory would turn into a town Hispanic - Roman, as certain traces seem to confirm it lapidary. In 1259 it appears as farmhouse of Toledo, with vineyard plantations. In 1283 Barcience is quoted again, in where there had his possessions a son of the famous mayor of Toledo, Esteban Illán. In the XIIIth century it is a property of the prior of Uclés, of the order of Santiago. The infante don Enrique, master of this Order, transfers this village, in 1421 to don Alfonso Tenorio, moved forward of Cazorla. In the middle of the XVth century, Enrique IV granted to the House of Miscellany the county of Cifuentes as well as other possessions, between them Barcience. (Fte.-Texto Delegation) |
