The word "Magán" has two meanings, it could be of Celtic origin, coming to mean "field or fertile plain", it would be in this synonymous case of the Latin "campus or pagus". Also that word in Germanic language means "force". This population was founded in Roman epoch acquiring big importance in the Middle Ages for his situation and proximity to Toledo. Test of it is that in 1114, when the Almoravid ones did not manage to conquer the capital toledana, Magán, as others localities and nearby Towns, he suffered the hard countermeasures of these armies. Fernando III granted to the city of Toledo true rights on the Magán mount in 1219, in exchange for the resignation on the part of this one to receive the quantity of 200 maravedis of the town of Hinge, privilege that was granted him by Alfonso VIII. But, before this date, some of the belonging grounds to Magán had been already donated to the Order of Monfrag, later fused in that of Calatrava. (Fte.-Texto Delegation to see link) |
