Municipality placed in of the province. It is formed by the ancient municipalities of Apatamonasterio, Arrazola and Axpe, after his merger in 1962.
The etymology of the place name Atxondo can come from Atz, rock, rock and ondo, "next to", that is to say, "next to the rock".
