The most ancient remains of this Town date back to the prehistory, to be more exact than the neolithic one, and they were found in the caves Txotxinkoba and Jentilkoba.
Both caves were used to bury the dead persons. Them they were burying in a collective way, in accordance with the traditions of that epoch
According to indicates Iturriza in his titled work "History of Biscay", this place was known like Ibaibaso. It changed name - always according to Iturriza - in the Xth century, after the supported struggles against the French, receiving the name of Gizaburuaga, "buru gabeko gizona" that it means "the man without head".
