Description
Areso is the official used toponym so much in Basque as in Castilian. Their first written mention dates of 1192 and it was already mentioned with the current denomination; it has been denominated therefore from old as Areso; although in some case it has been mentioned under similar forms: Arrecho (1366).
The name seems to be formed by a first element without identifying and the suffix abundancial - so (variant of - zu and - tsu) used in Basque. The first element of the name used to be identified with the words Basque area (sand) and haritz (oak), but they are mere speculations that cannot be demonstrated.
