His name comes from the plant ontina, much extended in the area and from Salz, in reference to the Virgin of the Salz. It is the first Town created by the National Institute of Colonization in Spain
Ontinar of Salz is the pioneer of the Towns of colonization. it finds placed in the ancient desert of the Violated one, of the Latin Route Lada, on the left margin of the river Gállego and opposite to sanctum of the Virgin of the Salz, who gets up to the opposite shore of the river. Watered by the Ravine of the Violated one and the Ditch of Barmaid. Being at present all his irrigation area.
The Parochial Church is dedicated to San Isidro. Under the same one dedication receives the cooperative of the field. Consequently, them holidays take place on May 15, day of San Isidro. Idelfonso Manuel Gil was inspired by Ontinar de Salz to write his novel "New Town", and this was also the first colonization place that Ramón J Sénder visited when it returned to his ground after almost forty years of exile.
The housings, mostly, do not overcome two heights, with one small orchard in the rear part of the same ones. One reserves space for the place of the most excellent, such buildings like the town hall or the Church. All this infested with a thick one wooded that, at the moment of his construction, changed completely the desert panorama of the area
